Biography

The National Conference of States Societies (NCSS) is a voluntary association of the state social and civic clubs of the national capital region of Washington, DC and suburbs. The oldest state society for Illinois was founded in 1854. NCSS has roots that date back to 1877. It was chartered by Congress on April 3, 1952 when President Harry Truman signed Public Law 86-292.

NCSS and almost all state societies are nonprofit and nonpartisan clubs that offer members social, civic, patriotic, cultural, educational, and sports events of special interest to the natives of the states.

NCSS and its member state societies are well known in Washington over the last one hundred years. Major activities of state societies and NCSS support such events as the Presidential Inauguration every four years and the National Cherry Blossom Festival every year.

In the course of one year, the state societies offer more than 250 events for their members that range from receptions to field trips to sporting events such as the Virginia Gold Cup. In 2007 there were about 50 active state or territorial societies.
