Volunteers Needed at Armed Forces Retirement Home

VetsDue to an unexpected cancellation, The Armed Forces Retirement Home urgently needs 20 volunteers to help out on Friday night, July 20 for a casino night for veterans and their families.  Volunteers are asked to wear black pants and white shirts and be willing to work from 6:15 to 10 PM.  If any members of state societies can help, please contact the home by sending an email to volunteer@afrh.gov. Or you can call Melodie Menke, Director of Volunteer Services, at 202-730-3410.

Volunteers are needed for food servers and Blackjack and poker dealers. Two hundred veterans are expected to be guests.  The Armed Forces Retirement Home is located at the corner of 200 Upsher Street, NW and 100 Rock Creek Church Road, NW at http://www.afrh.gov/afrh/wash/washcampus.htm.

Alaska Society "574" Barbeque is Saturday, July 21

The Alaska State Society of Washington, DC and friends will host a summertime "574" BBQ for Alaskans living in the DC area on Saturday, July 21st at the home of Veronica Slajer and Jack Ferguson in McLean, Virginia from noon until 3 pm. "574" are the first three digits of social security numbers issued to Alaska residents.

Alaska_flag_4Alaska Society President Christine Peters invites all Alaskans to come and bring a lawn chair, and you favorite appetizer, side dish, or dessert to share with others.  A potluck dish is not required but is encouraged along with potoato salads, macaroni salads, or flambe. The Alaska State Society will provide grilled SALMON and HALIBUT courtesy of the Pacific Seafood Processors Association.  Beverages are compliments of the Alaska Brewing Company.  On top of all this, be sure to bring your swim suit if you wish to take advantage of the pool.

Tickets for July 28 C.O.W.P.I.E. are Sold Out

Wyominglogo Saddle up for "the daddy of 'em all east of the Mississippi River. This is the 30th Annual roundup for urban cowboys and cowgirls east of the Chisolm Trail, east of the Pecos, north of the Potomac, west of Annapolis, east of the picket wire, and south of K Street.

Wymoning State Society President Joe Hicks reported on July 20 that the WSS will hold the 30thCowboy Annual C.O.W.P.I.E. celebration in honor of Cheyenne Frontier Days but the event has sold out of tickets.  For those who already have tickets, the starting time is at sundown, 8 PM on Saturday, July 28th on the National Mall between 14th and 15th Streets, NW.  C.O.W.P.I.E stands for Committee Of Wyoming People In the East. WSS started this great summer event in 1977 and it has been covered in The Washington Post.

Joe Hicks says "join us for plenty of beer drinking, boot scootin' and a ride on the mechanical bull! We welcome all with a Wyoming spirit or a western drawl.  Note that tickets are limited and available on a first come, first served basis - no sales at the door. See ya there!"

Colorado Rockies v. Washington Nationals July 21

LogoIdaho State Society President Kendra Waitley reports that the Idahoans will assemble for a tailgate party on Saturday, July 21 at 2 PM in Parking Lot 3 at RFK Stadium.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for kids under 9. The prices includes admission to the game at 3:55 PM and food at the tailgate party.

Kendra says this is a family-friendly event and "we hope that everyone can come out and join the fun!"  Members and friends of the Idaho State Society are asked toWashington_nationals_r  please RSVP to Kendra not later than Wednesday, July 16 to let her know how many adult and children tickets you want to purchase.
